Beeswax Food Wrap Recipe

These step-by-step instructions on how to make reusable beeswax wraps will have you ditching the plastic cling wrap in no time. The natural properties of beeswax—water repellent, antimicrobial, and everlasting make it an excellent choice for this project. Use them for wrapping food items or covering food storage containers. Perfect for the zero-waste home.

INGREDIENTS:

10ml Jojoba Oil

100g NZ Raw Beeswax

100g Pine Rosin

EQUIPMENT:

Double boiler

Cotton fabric pieces

Wax paper

Paintbrush

Brown paper

Clothes iron

INSTRUCTIONS:

Add the beeswax, pine rosin and jojoba oil into a pot (a double boiler is recommended) then heat until everything is all melted together. This may take up to 15mins depending on method used to melt them. 60-70 degrees is a good temperature to get them too.

While everything is melting, place wax paper on a clean table and place the first piece of fabric on top of it ready to have the hot wax painted onto it.

Using a paintbrush, paint as fast as you can to coat the entire piece of fabric in a layer of the wax. 

Peel fabric off wax paper as soon as you finish painting it and place it on brown paper. Fold the brown paper over the fabric so the fabric is in between. 

Using a clothes iron on low setting, quickly run it over the paper to help spread the wax to remove any excess wax, then remove from brown paper straight away so it doesn’t set. 

You’ve just made a plastic free, environmentally friendly, reusable food wrap. 

NOTE: Do not put your wraps in the dishwasher to clean them, simply wipe clean with some detergent and rinse. With daily use, beeswax wraps will last approximately 6-12 months as the coating gradually wears off. At that point
you can easily freshen them up with a new coat and they’re like new again.
